Summaries and challenges
A summary of the main results in each section will be posted here. Some or all of the examples will be worked
through in class: where the working is not given in these notes, complete it yourself! At the end of each section will be one or
more extra questions, the last of which is meant to be challenging and will involve either a proof, or a new concept.
If you are a math major, or just want to get an A, you should work hard enough at the class to be able to work
through these problems, although the final will not contain questiosn like these.
You should be studying harder questions than those on the exam to offset the stress of the test!

Webwork
Webwork is due every Friday night (starting October 16th) and is completed online: the schedule,
sections covered and further instructions can be found here
Don't try to access WebWork until (roughly) October 8th, as there will be nothing there! We will go over
its access in class.
On-campus link: http://homework.ps.uci.edu/webwork
For off-campus use, you must login through the campus VPN system. The WebVPN will not work, you must download the client and install it on your computer.
Here's a step-by-step:
- Visit http://www.oit.uci.edu/vpn/
- Highlight "2 VPN Software" and click "Download the Software VPN"
- Log in, select your operating system install the Cisco Client - save a shortcut to your desktop to make it easier
- Run the client: type vpn.uci.edu into the box if it isn't there already and click the `connect' button
- Enter your UCINetID and usual password. If all goes well, the client will vanish.
- You can now open a browser and point it to https://homework.ps.uci.edu/webwork/ which should now display correctly
- For those who are security conscious, ALL your web traffic will now be going through UCI's servers. Certain traffic (peer-to-peer services, etc.) will be blocked and
other activity mught be monitored. Once you're done with webwork, disconnect (on Windows, right click on the icon in the bottom left of your toolbar).
Either way, you can now click the correct course (Math 2A - 44140) and log-in (usual UCINetID/password)
If you have problems setting up the VPN or logging in, don't contact the TA or Professor! We have no ability to help you with connectivity issues or changing passwords.
- First make sure you are registered for the class! If this class isn't listed in eee (or you can't log onto eee...) then fix that first!
- For VPN issues, follow the suggestions on http://www.oit.uci.edu/vpn/ and contact the OIT helpdesk if it still doesn't work.
- If you can reach the WebWork Page http://homework.ps.uci.edu/webwork but can't log in: check you have the correct course code, 44150. If you still have problems,
follow the link on the WebWork page to contact the WebWork administrators or email webworkmath@ps.uci.edu
