1. with Moshe Jarden, Field Arithmetic, Springer Ergebnisse der Mathematik III, 11, Springer Verlag, Heidelberg, 1986, 457 pps; 2nd edition 2004, 780 pps. ISBN 3-540-22811-x. Html file update 03/16/13 ties in with new developments related to Galois stratification and its relation with Davenport's problem in a 2012 Science China paper. 2. Preface for Curves over finite fields, Cont. Math., proceedings of AMS-NSF Summer Conference 1997, Editor M. Fried, Seattle 245 (1999), ix–xxxiii. curvesFFields.html %-%-% curvesFFields.pdf

3. Arithmetic fundamental groups and noncommutative algebra, Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics, 70 (2002) editors M. Fried and Y. Ihara, 1999 von Neumann Conference on Arithmetic Fundamental Groups and Noncommutative Algebra, August 16–27, 1999 MSRI, vii–xxx.

I intend an html file to update progress on this volume, as it, the 1995 Recent Developments in the IGP, the 2004 Conference at Luminy, and the 2006 Conferences at Rock Creek (Montana) and RIMS (Kyoto) have series of talks that show progress on topics that is undocumented elsewhere. intro-toc-vonNeum.pdf

4. Prelude: Arithmetic fundamental groups and noncommutative algebra, Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics, 70 (2002) editors M. Fried and Y. Ihara, 1999 von Neumann Conference on Arithmetic Fundamental Groups and Noncommutative Algebra, August 16–27, 1999 MSRI, vii–xxx.

Details the relations between projects of various speakers, including tying back to the 1995 Recent Developments in the IGP conference in Seattle, in 1995. msrivol01.html %-%-% msrivol01.pdf

5. review – Inverse Galois Theory, Springer Monographs in Math., Gunter Malle and B. Heinrich Matzat, 436 pages, 3-540-62890-8, Springer, Berlin, 1999: BLMS 34 (2002), 109–12. The pdf file is a scan of what appeared in print. MatMal04-19-01.pdf is a searchable pdf version. Note the allusion at the review's beginning to Rigatelli's book on Galois. Almost all mathematicians will be surprised at what Galois actually did and how he actually died. While this review is tough on the authors' total preoccupation with classification of groups that might satisfy the conditions of either the monodromy method or the GAR hypothesis, it does pick out places helpful to those whose interest in algebraic equations in one variable that extend beyond the Inverse Galois Problem.
