Midterm 1 Solutions Updated, and more help on Judicious Guessing

I just corrected an error in problem 3A on the midterm. Also, I'm posting a writeup with (I hope) really good explanations of some trickier "judicious guessing" problems. Please look it over. I think the explanations are good and should help with some of the problems where there are trig functions on the righthand side.

Also, I think I came up with some good tricks on the method. Again, please read the writeup. All these downloads are here.

Quiz 2 Solutions (will be) Posted
Posted on Jan. 20, 2005, 9:41am

I'm creating the links to the second quiz and its solution now. I'll "unbreak" the links after class today.

In other news, I'm not quite finished grading the homework, but overall, the level of work shown has been good. I have a few comments: There's no reason to try to cram all your work into a tiny space. Some of these problems are complex, and they can take some time (and space) to figure out. Showing your work is important, both for grading, and more importantly, to allow you to work carefully and catch your mistakes. I personally recommend working on scratch paper first and then rewrite your final answers afterwards. Lastly, please do staple your work when you hand it in. Thanks -- Paul

Also, I have updated the syllabus to include the tutoring center location and my hours there. Also, please note that I correct the syllabus to note that you should email both Dr. Guidotti and myself with your YAQ questions. (This is a change from "either or".)

First Class Announcement and Details
Posted Jan. 5, 2005, 9:27pm

While Dr. Guidotti's class won't meet until this Friday (January 7), we will meet tomorrow as scheduled. I have decided to set my office hours as Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30pm to 1:30pm or by appointment. If you plan to come to an office hour, I'd recommend that you email me in advance so I can plan to be there for sure.

Otherwise, I will be working in the Math Tutoring Center for two hours a week. (Those hours will be determined and announced later.) I'd assume that the math tutoring center schedule will eventually be posted here.

The syllabus is finished and posted in the downloads section below.
