This course is designed for secondary school teachers who are interested in studying problem solving techniques in various areas of high school mathematics.
The course was designed by Ludmil Katzarkov - Professor at UCI, with Larry Crystal UCI and in collaboration with Dr. Dorothy Terman from IUSD.
The course will be taught by L. Katzarkov and will meet once a week Tuesday. from 6-7:20 p.m. at UCI in Rowland Hall 114. The first meeting will be on January 11. It will continue for two quarters - each of them is worth two credit units and can be taken independently. The grade will be Pass/Fail.
The homework is an essential part of the course and the participants will be asked to do presentations in class. The web page for this course can be found at the URL:
http://www.math.uci.edu/~mathcirc/math194/lectures/index.html
The two best participants in the course will be be given the opportunity to participate in the COSMOS (see http://www.cosmos.uci.edu/) program in UCI (Summer 2000) - including attending the special lectures, meet with internationally recognized scientists, meeting the coaches of USA Math Olympiad. They will be offered a stipend to organize their own Math Circles at their own schools.
The teachers can enroll via ACCESS ( UCI Extension program) after the first day of classes, at which time they get an ACCESS form from Extension program at UCI. After the form is signed by L. Katzarkov the students can go back to Extension to pay. To enrol in the two unit course Winter 2000 use code 44739. The cost will be approximately $ 265 per quarter.
We will use the book - D.Fomin, S. Genkin, I. Itenberg Mathematical circles, Mathematical World vol. 7, American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1996. It can be purchased for $ 29 from the UCI Boockstore or on the internet (http://www.ams.org/bookstore/).
