Precalculus Placement Test
What
is the purpose of the Precalculus Placement Test?
The
Precalculus Placement Test will place you into the appropriate
introductory mathematics course at UCI: Math 2A, the first quarter of
the calculus series, or a course in precalculus, Math 1A or Math 1B.
Math 1A is offered Fall quarter and Summer Session I, Math 1B is
offered Fall and Winter quarters and both summer sessions, and Math
2A is offered every term.
Should
I take the Precalculus Placement Test or the Mathematical Analysis
Placement Test?
If
you have completed a precalculus (or equivalent) course with a grade
of “C” or better, you should take the Precalculus
Placement Test
for placement in the appropriate Math course. Examples of
precalculus courses include fourth-year high school math with
trigonometry and math analysis and community college courses.
If
you have not taken a precalculus (or equivalent) course or did not
receive a “C” or better in a precalculus course, you may
take the Mathematical
Analysis Placement Test
for appropriate placement into Precalculus, Math 1A or Math 1B.
Who
needs to take Math 2A?
Math
2A is required for the following majors:
Applied
Ecology Engineering
(all majors) Biological
Sciences
Mathematics Chemistry Physics
Economics Earth
& Environmental Sciences Information
&
Computer Science
Students
majoring in Anthropology, International Studies, Linguistics,
Political Science, Psychology, Social Science, or Sociology may apply
calculus toward satisfaction of their major requirements.
Math
2A may be used to satisfy part of UCI’s Mathematics and
Symbolic Systems (Category V) breadth requirement.
Undecided/Undeclared students who are considering any of these
options should consider taking calculus. Math 2A is also required
for students who plan to go into medical, dental or pharmacy school
or other health professions.
Precalculus
Placement Test results are valid for one year only; students
(including ICS majors) who do not plan to take Math 2A within a year
may postpone taking the test. Students in the School of Engineering
or Physical Sciences will find that taking Math 1B in the summer
makes it easier to stay on schedule for their majors.
Who
is exempt?
You
are exempt from testing (and from taking Math 2A) if you received a
qualifying score on the College Board Advanced Placement (AP)
Mathematics Examination. If you scored:
4
or 5 on the Calculus
AB
exam, you may enroll directly into Math 2B.
3
on the Calculus
BC
exam, you may enroll directly into Math 2B.
4
or 5 on the Calculus
BC
exam, you may enroll directly into Math 2D or 2J (exempt from Math
2B).
No
other test scores or precalculus courses (taken at other colleges or
universities) may be used to exempt you from taking the Precalculus
Placement Test.
You should take the Precalculus Placement Test if you have taken the
College Board AP Mathematics Examination but have not yet received
the results.
How
can I enroll in Math 2A?
There
are two ways to enroll in Math 2A:
Precalculus
Placement Test:
You may place into Math 2A with a qualifying score on the
Precalculus
Placement Test. You must enroll in Math 2A within one year of your
test date.
Precalculus
course: If
your score does not qualify you for Math 2A, you should enroll in the
precalculus course specified on your result letter (Math 1A or 1B).
Completing Math 1B (the second quarter of the precalculus sequence)
with a grade of “C” or better will enable you to enroll
in Math 2A without taking or retaking the Precalculus Placement Test.
note:
you may be dropped from your math 2a class if you have not satisfied
one of the above requirements.
How
can I prepare for the examination?
The
Academic Testing Center has a small reference library to help you
with your test preparation. Sample problems and an Online
Mathematics Diagnostic Test are available from the Testing Center
website at www.testingoffice.uci.edu.
Review your high school precalculus material and/or a precalculus
textbook such as Precalculus
by
Michael Sullivan (Prentice Hall) before taking the test.
What
should I study before the examination?
Absolute
values
Rational
expressions
Algebraic
inequalities
Radicals
Plane
and analytical geometry
Functions
Exponents
and logarithms
Linear
equations
Graphs
Algebraic functions
Factoring
polynomials
Trigonometry
The
Precalculus Placement Test is a 60-minute exam consisting of 40
multiple-choice questions. Calculators are permitted. Results are
valid for one calendar year only from test date. The test may be
repeated only once per calendar month. Two forms of valid photo ID
are required. Test registration is required; register online at the
UCI
Academic Testing Center
website, by email to testingcenter@uci.edu
or by phone at (949) 824-6207.
